10 tips for around the home

Do your part to ensure a healthy planet by incorporating these ten simple actions into your everyday life.

  1. Switch to renewable energy
Buy non-polluting green electricity from your electricity company. If they don't sell it, change power companies to one that does.

  2. Avoid standby
Turn off televisions, videos, stereos and computers when they are not in use - they can use between 10 and 60% of the power they use when on standby.

  3. In the dark
Turn off lights when you don't need them - it saves energy even after a minute or two.

  4. Wash economically
Use the washing machine or dishwasher only when you have a full load. Use washing powder suitable for low temperature washes (a 30 degree wash will get most clothes perfectly clean) and use economy programmes.

  5. Keep your (fridge) cool
Don't leave fridge doors open for longer than necessary, let food cool down fully before putting it in the fridge or freezer, defrost regularly and keep at the right temperature. Where possible, don't stand ovens and fridges/freezers next to each other.

  6. Turn your thermostat down
Reducing your room temperature by 1 degree could cut your heating bills by up to 10%, saving you money.

  7. Be a bright spark
Use energy saving light bulbs. They last up to 12 times longer than ordinary lightbulbs.

  8. Look for the logo
Buying a new fridge, freezer or washing machine? Look for the Energy Efficient label. You will do your bit for the environment plus save money. Visit the official Energy rating site.

  9. Replace showerheads and taps with high-efficiency models
Changing just one showerhead and two taps reduces water usage by up to 70% without affecting performance. The amount you'll save on your water and electricity bills will pay for the installation in just three to 12 months.

  10. Let solar energy do your drying
When the sun is out, don't be tempted to use your tumble drier — hang your clothes out in the sunshine instead and let solar energy do the work for free.
